About the Playground
Play first
Choose something that interests you and see what happens. There is no prescribed path and no right way to play. You do not need to understand an idea before you explore it.
Listen first
The Playground begins with listening rather than names, notation or explanations. Sounds can be explored, compared and remembered without having to label them first.
Step · Hop · Jump
Musical Hopscotch makes the distance between sounds visible and audible. A step moves to the next position. A hop skips a position. A jump travels farther. The complete chromatic geography remains visible, so the player can see the distance travelled while hearing it.
The distance is not explained first. It is seen, heard and travelled.
Different ways to play
An apparatus does not have to have one purpose. The same Roundabout can invite a first encounter with pitch relationships or give an experienced musician somewhere to tune the ear to less familiar sound patterns. The same principle can extend across the Playground: simple to enter, with more possibilities there for anyone who wants them.
The Playground
Sound, movement, imagination and creativity belong together. The Playground offers places to listen, explore, experiment, make, remember, respond and connect. Each apparatus opens another possibility; there is no prescribed path.
The Boat
Music is one expression of musicality. Sound is one of its foundations. And the world is our soundscape.
The Boat visits places, people and cultures. A journey might bring a song, a story, a festival, a landscape, or the sounds of everyday life. Gather experiences and take home a picture of the journey.
The Train
Every sound carries a story. Every experience adds something to our imagination. And when we bring those sounds together in new ways, we create something that has never been heard before.
Hear the world around you, play with its sounds and make your own arrangement. The more experiences in your grab bag, the more possibilities you have for creating.
